Our goal is to make baking as easy as possible in a microwave with convenient smaller portions. We used 30 plus years baking experience to come up with the first microwave cake mix created for Asian kitchens. With our commitment to genuine flavor, we only use locally-available, quality ingredients.
Most of all, we delight in sharing our love of baking with our family, friends – and now – you!
Who are Karen and Patrick? The KP Story
The ‘K’ and ‘P’ of KP Kitchen Taiwan are Karen and Patrick – a Canadian/American couple who now call Taiwan home.
Before she was tall enough to see over the counter, Karen followed her mother around the kitchen cracking eggs, measuring milk and mixing in the flour. At nine, she baked her first solo cake – chocolate, of course - as a surprise for her kitchen mentor.
While at college, Patrick got a full-time job at a local bakery. He hauled 50-pound sacks of flour and learned the difference between buttercream and ganache while developing a taste for finer ingredients.
Since Karen and Patrick joined forces in 2010, creating food together has been part of their ongoing love story – starting with their courtship and now in business with KP Kitchen Taiwan.
WWe started KP Kitchen Taiwan to bring the enjoyment of baking and cooking into the homes of both expats and Taiwanese customers alike. We’ve lived in Asia for around 9 years and learned to adapt our methods to an Asian kitchen without a full-sized oven.
We aim to make North American baking and cooking as easy as possible in a toaster oven, microwave or stovetop with the convenience of smaller sized portions and the assurance of quality locally-available ingredients. Most of all, we delight in sharing our love of baking and cooking with our family, friends - and now - you!
A chance opportunity brought us to Taiwan nearly four years ago. We loved the city life of Taipei for the first three years but the dream had always been to move to the countryside. Recently we took the leap and moved to Yilan County which gives us the best of both world: easy access to the big city while we enjoy the slower pace of living among the rice fields.
Cos we’re North American and we love the holidays: Easter in the spring, our national holidays in early July, Halloween and Thanksgiving in the fall and ending the year with Christmas. So why not join us and bake up some of our favourite seasonal traditions right here in Taiwan.
All of our products are proudly made in Taiwan.

It’s so easy…really! Two minutes from opening the mix packet to pulling your mug cake out of the microwave. The toughest part is waiting a few minutes before your freshly baked mug cake is cool enough to eat.
You will need to buy the “wet” ingredients - milk and oil - which you probably have stocked in your kitchen already.
The Micro Mix are ideal for 800W microwaves. For a 1000-watt microwave, reduce the cooking time to 50 seconds. For a 600-watt microwave, add 10-20 seconds.
The wattage of a microwave is usually found on the back of the microwave or in the instruction manual. You can also test the strength of your microwave by following these easy steps.
Absolutely not, as the name suggests these DIY Micro Mixes are made in the microwave. We strongly recommend that you do not try making them in the oven as the recipe has been specially adapted for microwave baking.
You don’t. You can use your own microwave safe mug or dish of 300 ml (10 oz) or more.
Aside from a microwave, you will need:
You can pick your favorite flavor between classic vanilla cake and rich chocolate cake.
We suggest you top your vanilla microwave cake with whipped cream and colorful sprinkles. For your chocolate microwave cake, we’d add a scoop of ice cream and fruit or chocolate sauce.
While both the vanilla and chocolate cake flavours are great on their own, there are many ways that you can turn your microwave cake into something extra special. For recipe ideas using our DIY Micro Mixes, check out the microwave cake recipes on our blog.
Our products are made with a commitment to high quality ingredients sourced within Taiwan. Some of these ingredients may be imported, like our cocoa powder from Malaysia, and all have been through the rigorous standards for imported products that Taiwan food safety standards require.
We also value freshness - without using any extra chemicals or preservatives. We use aluminum-free baking powder and we don’t add any artificial preservatives or anti-caking ingredients. As a result, some clumping of the dry mix may occur, but this won't affect your results. Break up any lumps with a fork before adding the dry mix to the wet ingredients.
Ingredients lists can be found on the individual product box and under product descriptions on our online store.
Absolutely! All the ingredients in our DIY Micro Mix cake mix are vegetarian and vegan-friendly. If you’d prefer to make your microwave cake vegan, we recommend using non-dairy milk (preferably unsweetened) and neutral vegetable oil or melted coconut oil.
Our DIY Micro Mix are made with high-quality ingredients, however they are not organic.

If you have any other questions about potential food allergens or dietary requirements, please contact us.
Aside from being fun, cooking and baking at home gives you more control over what you eat. When you make your own food, you can make healthier choices, use quality ingredients, and avoid extra preservatives and additives often found in premade food.

Baking or cooking with our mixes are an ideal kitchen activity for parents and kids of all ages. They’re quick and easy-to-make, tasty, and require minimal equipment – perfect for kids to enjoy time in the kitchen with mom or dad. Depending on your kids’ ages, you may need to help with parts of the recipe that uses a knife and hot oven, microwave or stovetop. Yes, there may be a mess to clean up but that’s part of the fun of baking and cooking and also part of the kids’ learning responsibility as junior baker or chef.
We don’t, however, you can find plenty of help in your baking and cooking adventures with our recipes, videos, tips, and articles on our blog. And feel free to contact us if you have any other baking or cooking related questions.
We’re all about those recipe ideas! If you’re ready to get a little more adventurous in your cooking and baking activities, we have a collection of inspirational recipes for baking beyond the box to use our mixes in new ways for all levels of bakers and chefs.
True, we are a box mix company after all. You’re welcome to take our inspirational recipe and make them yourself using your own base recipes. Bear in mind that our recipes are designed especially to be made in toaster ovens, so first check the yield of our recipe against the yield of your base recipe. In other words, if our recipe makes a 9x9” cake and yours makes a 9x13” cake, you will need to halve your recipe or double the additional ingredients in our recipe.
If only I had a dollar for every time I’m asked this... North American baking uses standard “cup” and “spoon” measurements. It’s really important to use this standard measurement or the equivalent milliliters for the best results when you’re baking.
1 cup = 240 ml
½ cup = 120 ml
¼ cup = 60 ml
1 table spoon = 15 ml
1 teaspoon = 5 ml
We get asked a lot about substitutions. Baking is essentially chemistry, so as with chemical reactions even the smallest variation can result in big changes in the final products - although hopefully none of the volcanic explosions you experienced in high school chemistry class. We’ve created these products to produce a very specific and tasty baking outcome. The first time you make any of our products we highly recommend that you follow the instructions on the box without making any variations or substitutions, otherwise the result may be quite different from how we intended. In short, follow the recipe and you’ll be sure to have a tasty treat in the end.
We do however understand that more experienced bakers may want to add a little variety to the mix so we have created dozens of recipes on our blog for baking beyond the box. We also continue to work on substitutions for vegetarian and vegan bakers and we publish our tried and tested substitutions on our recipe blog too.
